Emilio Santoyo

My work interweaves audiovisual narratives that transcend genres, situating itself between cinema and the visual arts. Through interdisciplinary research, I subvert romanticized representations in Latin American audiovisual culture to reveal dynamics of power, class, and race. I dissolve the boundaries between my subjective experience and cinematic conventions, creating a dreamlike and artificial world of palimpsestic images. Inspired by Latin American melodrama, I combine criticism and admiration in an ironic and sincere proposal. Using the "New Melodramatic Method," a self-reflective, decolonial, and multidisciplinary methodology, I use the system's own codes to dismantle its toxic modes of representation.
